Brief History
The Mexican hairless cat
dates back to the pre Colombian era. In 1966 in Ontario, Canada. A
female cat called Elizabeth gave birth to a hairless male kitten named
Prune. Prune and Elizabeth went on to produced hairless kittens. The
spontaneous mutation that was responsible for this trait is caused by
the recessive gene. Lack of hair is not unique in the animal kingdom
similar, mutations occur in dogs and mice. The Sphynx does not appeal to
everyone taste...BUT always attracts attention!!
Characteristics.
The Sphynx is very lively,
mischievous, playful and independent. Friendly towards other pets, but
will want to be "Alfa cat" and rule the household ( owner/s included).
Very affectionate and possessive, they thrive on fuss. Sphynx come in
all colours, patterns and eye colour, although the eye colour should
correspond with that of the body colour.
Lack of coat means they
are vulnerable to the cold, but being a cat they know where to find the
best heat spots in the house....At the other end of the scale Sphynx are
at risk in hot weather, and can be susceptible to sunburn...Unlike other
breeds the Sphynx sweats through it's skin, and need regularly cleaning.
Sphynx will adopt a characteristic pose, when standing, and will stand
holding one front paw raised..
To touch a sphynx is quite
a shock for some people, they feel very warm to the touch and is like
stroking a peach or chamois leather..
General
Appearance.
Medium size body, fairly
muscular, oval high paws with thick pads that look like "air cushions".
large ears, and oval eyes. No true eyebrows or whiskers because of the
recessive gene.
