Brief History

In 1959 in Buckfastleigh, Devon a litter of kittens were born to a tortie and white  farm cat. One of the kittens had a curly coat.

At the same time it was noticed that a feral black tom cat which lived in the nearby abandoned tin mine, had same curly coat.

This kitten was called Kirlee and is the founder of the Devon Rex breed as we know it today. In 1961 Kirlee was mated to two

Cornish Variant in the belief that the Cornish and Devon genes were comprisable. But  this was proved not to be. ALL kittens

born straight coated. This therefore indication, that the Devon and Cornish Rex genes were different and recessive.

Kirklee was then mated back to his mother, which produced a curly coated kittens. The Devon Rex breed was recognised

    in the UK in 1967.

Character

The Devon Rex is highly sociable, affectionate, lively, acrobatic, and independent. Devon's are friendly towards other cats and at ease with other pets. They hate being alone, very sensitive, with a  voice that will chatter away to anyone who will listen.

A fetish with water, and will sit for hours waiting for a tap to be turn on or drip. Can be heard in the middle of the night playing in the bath with the plug chain... Word of warning ...keep the toilet seat down !!   Devon's are very dog like and will wag their tail when happy or excited, they tend to trot rather then walk.  Are expert climbers   and are very easy to train to retrieve etc..

Devon's come is every colour and pattern  you can image possible. Also can be odd eyed. Devon's are ideal if you or someone in your household suffers from allergies, a large percentage of people who react can live  with a Devon...If you have allergies I STRONGLY RECOMMEND speak to the breeders and find one that is a REX ONLY household where you can visit BEFORE making that cession  to buying...there is nothing worst the having to return a kitten you and your family have fell in love with because of allergies, not to mention the up heave for the kitten.

General Appearance

Large ears, oval eyes body medium in size with broad chest, Oval neat paws and whip like tail. Long slim legs with the hind legs being slightly longer. The coat should be curled or waved and covering the cat. (Allowances for a kitten that may not have grown a full coat yet or a Queen that has just reared a litter of kittens and is not 100% back on form). Of course the  Devon does have a  moult form summer to winter coat, and you will notice this at certain times of the year. Whiskers  are curly ( of course) and quite brittle and break off easily especially with the kittens as they play fight.  The size of the ears does tend to attract every possible grain of dirt in a very short period, so regular ear cleaning is a must.  Coat very easy to maintain,  a firm stroke with a rubber glove run under a tap will remove those hairs and a chamois cloth or silk scarf will enhance the sheen on the Devon's coat.
